.. and the winner is... Rio de Janiero!

The 2016 Summer Olympics, Games of the XXXI Olympiad will officially be held in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.

This makes it the first ever time a city in South America hosts an Olympic Games, and follows Brazil's hosting of the FIFA World Cup in 2014

The host city of the games were announced at the 121st IOC Session in Copenhagen Denmark on the 2nd October 2009. All cities made their pitch to the IOC, Chicago's involved U.S. President Barak Obama, Madrid's involved the King of Spain, Tokyo's involved the Japanese Prime minister and Rio with the passionate plea from the Brazilian President.

There were many shocks as Rio's main rival and odds on favourite, Chicago was eliminated in the first round.

Then followed the elimination of Tokyo from contention. Leaving Madrid and Rio de Janiero.

In the end the clear choicewas Rio, with the 2012 olympics being in Europe (London) affecting Madrid's bid (although very good).

The final results are as follows:

The announcement of Rio de Janiero caused widespread celebration:

So what do we look forward to in Rio de Janiero 2016?

Can't wait for 2016! Imagine the Opening Ceremony.
